With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver over a 12-year span.
When silver lost its value in the mid 1890s, the miners abandoned the place and it became a ghost town. Walter Knott (yes, the creator of Knott's Berry Farm!) purchased Calico in the 1950s and restored its buildings to look as they used to, originally.
There are lots of stores and activities to do. The picture below is the town's old school.

We took a little tour on Maggie's Mine and a ride on the Calico-Odessa railway.
